February Is Here — Now the Countdown to Reading Break Officially Begins
Making it to February matters more than students often realize.
The first month of the semester is rarely smooth, even when things look “fine” on the surface. January is about adjustment — new routines, new expectations, new demands on time and energy. If you’ve shown up, stayed engaged, and kept moving forward through the first four weeks, that’s worth endorsing.
Too many students skip this step and move straight to self-criticism. Taking a moment to acknowledge that you’ve made it to February isn’t about lowering standards — it’s about recognizing effort so you don’t quietly disengage just as the semester starts to intensify.
February is also when an important shift happens.
This is the point where the official countdown to Reading Break begins.
Many students tell themselves they’ll wait until March or Reading Break to reset, catch up, or ask for help. The problem isn’t the intention — it’s the delay. One of the biggest challenges students face is waiting too long to use the resources already available to them.
Resources aren’t just for when things fall apart. They’re meant to give students an advantage before pressure peaks.
Academic advising, learning strategy support, office hours, tutoring, accessibility services — these are tools. When used early, they help students refine systems, clarify expectations, and stay ahead of deadlines. When used late, they often feel likeemergency measures layered on top of stress.
This is a good moment to pause and reflect honestly.
What has been the biggest challenge so far this semester?
Time management? Organization? Motivation? Understanding expectations? Balancing school with work or personal responsibilities?
Identifying challenges now isn’t a sign that you’re behind. It’s a sign that you’re paying attention.
As discussed in earlier posts, Reading Break often becomes a mental finish line. But how you arrive at Reading Break matters far more than what you plan to do during it. If January and early February are spent reacting and pushing things off, Reading Break turns into a recovery mission instead of a reset.
Using resources now changes that trajectory.
You don’t need to overhaul everything. You don’t need to be struggling to reach out. Small, proactive adjustments in February create breathing room later — especially as March approaches and deadlines begin to cluster.
Endorse yourself for making it to February. Then give yourself an advantage by using the support available to you — early, intentionally, and before the semester asks for more than it needs to.
That’s how the countdown to Reading Break becomes manageable instead of overwhelming.
