It’s Okay Not to Think About School Right Now

This is a message I think many students (and parents) need to hear.

Throughout the year, the focus is on planning, deadlines, exams, and staying organized. Summer serves a different purpose.

Many students feel guilty if they aren’t doing something “productive” every day. They wonder if they should be reading ahead, taking extra courses, or constantly preparing for September.

For most students, that’s not necessary.

Rest is productive.

Summer is an opportunity to recharge mentally, physically, and emotionally after a demanding academic year. Coming back refreshed in September is often more valuable than squeezing in another few weeks of academic work.

That doesn’t mean doing nothing all summer.

Continue reading for enjoyment. Learn a new skill. Get a summer job. Volunteer. Travel. Spend time with family and friends. Exercise. Develop hobbies.

These experiences build confidence, independence, communication, and problem-solving—skills that are just as valuable in school as they are outside it.

One thing I would encourage is staying gently curious.

Read articles that interest you. Listen to podcasts. Visit museums. Build something. Cook. Try something you’ve never done before.

Learning doesn’t stop because classes do.

It simply looks different.

Then, sometime in mid-August, begin thinking about the upcoming school year.

Until then?

Give yourself permission to enjoy your summer.

Sometimes the best preparation for a successful school year is returning with a full tank instead of an empty one.
