Mark the Year: Refresh, Reset!

Tomorrow is Labour Day. For many of us, this is the true First Day of the Year that we structure our academic life around. Just as most cultures mark the transition into a new year, I recommend that students mark Labour Day as a Special Day and celebrate it to close off 2020-21 and open 2021-22.

If you’ve been following these blogs, you will know that I am big on rewarding yourself–and this is a weekend to do that.

A reward doesn’t have to be big (but it can be) or expensive (but it can be). This is about pausing to have a day that has meaning for you. A day that you will tuck away in your memory and savour from moment to moment in the coming term.

You’ve done your checklist, so reward yourself. If you haven’t done your checklist, schedule that for the coming week, but take Labour Day to take a breath and get ready for all the checklists coming up.

Here’s a list:

  • a day trip along a new route–walk, bike, drive–whatever brings you joy
  • a spa retreat–this can be candles and scent in your own hot bath
  • a quiet day out on a nature trail
  • quiet time in a religious sanctuary
  • curled up with a pile of novels
  • stand-up paddle boarding (that’s me)
  • a day at a market you’ve never been to
  • take-out from a restaurant you’ve been meaning to try
  • an afternoon of music–listening or creating
  • putting together that recipe you haven’t had time to make
  • . . .
  • . . .
  • something that you’ve been putting off that you’ve really wanted to do, but haven’t had time!

This last long weekend before Thanksgiving is the chance to reset and refresh for the weeks ahead. Reward, and refresh. Tomorrow night, say Goodbye! to 2020-21. Tuesday morning, it’s Hello 2021-22!

Be well, be safe, and connect with me for the 2021-22 reset! It’s been a hell of a year, but we got through it. And we will again! [email protected]
