The last lab, the last class, the final paper, the group presentation—it all happens in the next week to ten days. Plus there are the end-of-term complexities such as moving, maybe getting ready for grad, and finalizing your summer job.

It’s a good time to take a breath, congratulate yourself for getting this far in the term, and then list out the loose ends that you want to tie up the term. Here are a few:

  • Check your emails and class communication boards for last-minute changes in due dates or course requirements.
  • Check the posted exam schedules.
  • Check to make sure you have received credit for all work submitted.
  • Go to the last class. Ask questions. This can be the class where broad hints about the exam are given. Also bear in mind that if you have asked for help or an extension and do not show up for the last class . . .
  • Follow up with your group.
  • Update your contact list with changes as class colleagues return home or move about. You’ll also want the contacts of temporary or leaving instructors who will no longer be on the school’s directory.
  • List and write thank you notes. Convey specific appreciation for courses you feel you have benefitted from, and for help and encouragement received. For example, you might just drop by with a donut and a thanks for the librarian who sourced the impossible-to-find material for you.
  • And after the last class, take that reward! The one that you planned at the beginning of the term for when term ended!

Then get ready to pivot into the switch from class routine to exams. More on that next week.
