TAKE A BREATH
This weekend is a turning point for many–the academic spring sprint is over, the summer sprint starts for many tomorrow. For high school students, finals are over, grad is done. The student cohort is all over the map for the summer: Some of you are gearing up for another academic session, some of you are starting your summer gig, some of you are part way through, some are travelling. Some of you are physically back at work or class, some are still ZOOMing.
Coming up this week, aside from academia, are Canada Day and Independence Day–dual citizens have a really long weekend. I’m hoping that wherever you are in this matrix of study, work, travel, or just chilling, you take time to mark this transition time.
Time to celebrate what you have completed, to celebrate having made it through a truly imperfect year. Planning for what’s next can wait for a bit while for this day you take time to savour whatever is good for you right now, even if that savouring partly means pausing and allowing yourself to mourn.
Jot down on paper or on your fingers the good things and the not good things that you’ve accepted. And then mark the turning point with a bike ride along a favourite trail, a quiet couple of hours at a favourite coffee shop with a book, a hike, a zero-spend window shopping trip at a new mall–something that is just for you.
And wrap yourself in that calm, add it to your reserve for moving forward.
